# Alteration or repair permit B2609457 at 3307 Sherman Ave NW, Washington

DC Department of Buildings permit B2609457: issued Oct 7, 2026 for alteration or repair work at 3307 Sherman Ave NW. On an existing gravel pad with dimensions of 12 ft by 16 ft in my rear yard I plan to add a pergola made of dimensional lumber. The gravel pad is surrounded by 6x6 posts laid flat around the perimeter. This pergola will mainly be used to hang some netting inside and hit golf and baseballs into the netting. I plan to have an internal height of 10 feet so that I can hang heavy duty netting and have room to swing without hitting the framing. There is currently a rollup door at one end of the pad with a frame 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide. This uses 6x6 lumber posts on either side and double 2x8s as the beam across the top. I plan to use that frame to support one side of the pergola. The pergola will be approximately 12x16, covering the full gravel area. Based on Zoning Administrator Interpretation 6 (https://dob.dc.gov/node/1621576) I plan that the cross members to be spaced at 36 inches, more than the more than 24 inches on center mentioned in the interpretation. Following that interpretation, my understanding is that the pergola would not be considered building area, would not count toward lot occupancy, and would not be subject to any applicable setback requirements Please let me know if any other description is needed. I originally submitted a similar request as Awning Permit (A2602169) and received the below reply so am filing as an alteration and repair permit as instructed. 'According to the scope of work you have selected the incorrect permit type. This permit type is for Awnings ONLY. Please apply for an Alteration and repair permit for the full scope of work shown.'.
