City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) is proposing to relocate a diversion structure located in South Boulder Creek with the primary goal of defragmenting habitat by providing upstream passage for fish and aquatic invertebrates. The project is located on property owned by the City of Boulder between Baseline Road and South Boulder Road. The East Boulder Ditch (EBD) diversion dam is located approximately 0.3 miles south of Baseline Road. It is a concrete diversion dam with a bypass channel and headgate and is located on the inside of a meander bend. The diversion dam backs up water 200 feet upstream, resulting in sediment deposition that necessitates regular maintenance. It also fragments aquatic habitat by acting as a barrier to movement, stopping fish and aquatic invertebrates from swimming upstream most of the year. OSMP is proposing to remove the existing EBD diversion structure and then construct a new diversion structure approximately 300 feet south, incorporating design that allows for fish passage and improved sediment transport. Although the project is located in Unincorporated Boulder County, a City of Boulder Standard Wetland Permit Application and public notification letters are required for this work. No trees will be removed and there will be no impact to surrounding trails.
