Demolition at 1209 Old Keith Rd, Wake County

Wake County Permit and Inspections permit DPR-175526-2026: issued Jul 13, 2026 for demolition work at 1209 Old Keith Rd. During the application process for an addition to the dwelling at 1209 Old KEITH Road Wake Forest, we were told the regulation allowed us to have only three accessory buildings on our property, therefore we are required to demolish two of the accessory buildings. One, an old chicken house which is 8800 ft.². The second is a storage building which is approximately135 ft.². I have learned that the total square footage of the accessory buildings cannot be greater than the square footage of the dwelling. Neither of the buildings have electricity now or use water from the private well on site. Everything was disconnected many years prior to the application for this permit. The power was received from Duke progress energy. The chicken house contains four large iron fans, connecting waterers and feeder on a drop line, wooden slats to raise the chicken off the ground, two iron stoves, piles of lumber, wire, an iron wood splitter, vintage windows, wire egg baskets, and other numerous vintage items. The storage building contains roofing shingles, Vintage antique glassware, furniture, and farming implements.. The property used to be a working farm. We lost the farm status when the state decided to build at new Hwy#98 and they took part of our farm land. We lost our livelihood and our tax advantage. The land was not surveyed at the time of the highway construction. When we divided a plot off for our son and his wife, they had the acreage surveyed and we discovered that the amount was not what was listed on the tax forms. For 50 years we had paid taxes on property that did not exist, resulting in many thousands of dollars. Possibly, the state took more land than was quoted. This was very difficult to accept. I feel that if the state deems it necessary to take your land then the state should perform a survey of the land. perhaps this should be taken to the legislature. Would these accessory buildings have to come down if we were still a farm? We had plans to take these down, and this was quoted to the office staff and listed on the site map, but after getting ranging from $20,000-$40,000, we were reconsidering the demolition. Then we were told about the regulation. We have four accessory buildings. why do we have to take two of them down, when we have been told we can have three. The calculations of the square footage of the impervious surfaces versus the square footage of the land appeared to be in the accepted ratio. Perhaps this needs to be revisited and explained further;.

Type of work and status are our own standard labels, so permits compare across cities. The city's wording is in the "City's category" and "City's status" rows. We show costs under $100 as not listed, because filers often enter $0 or $1 when the city doesn't require a cost.
